Beth B: Glowing

The artist and filmmaker Beth B works in the genres of experimental, feature and documentary film and has also turned to interdisciplinary media art in the course of her more than 45 years of work. Her films, installations, live performances and photographs address trauma and mental illness, sexuality and experiences of violence, gender identities and self-determination from a feminist perspective. With Glowing, silent green is dedicating an extensive exhibition to the US-American artist.

Beth B (born 1955) began her artistic work in the late 1970s in the No Wave scene, a New York underground movement whose name ironically refers to New Wave pop culture. In this context, female musicians and visual artists confronted popular forms with avant-garde anti-art. Her filmography includes more than 30 short and long films, including works in hybrid form that merge fiction and documentary. Collaboration with other artists is an essential aspect of her work, for example in film portraits of Lydia Lunch and Ida Applebroog as well as in her collaborative video and performance art.

Beth B's exhibition at silent green shows the video installation Glowing in the Betonhalle which tells the story of overcoming traumatic experiences in short film portraits. The large-scale projected films will also be accompanied by live music, dance and spoken word contributions as part of a performance evening. In addition, the sound and video installation Near Death will be presented, specifically designed for the Betonhalle of the former crematorium.

As part of the retrospective The War Is Never Over, numerous films by Beth B from the late 1980s to the present day will also be shown in the Kuppelhalle of silent green.
