The Third Life of Agnès Varda

Exhibition, Film series, Workshops & Talks
June 9 – July 20, 2022

Agnès Varda is regarded as one of the most influential creative personalities of our time - the photographer, filmmaker and visual artist, who died in 2019 at the age of ninety, left behind a life's work spanning more than six decades, in which the pioneer of modern film constantly reinvented herself. Her last creative period - her "third life as a young artist", as she called it herself - is still far less known and less accessible than the numerous films she directed before.

The solo exhibition in silent green's Betonhalle is now dedicated to this "third life", which she began at the age of 75 at the Venice Biennale. This is the first time that such an extensive exhibition of Varda's work will be shown in Germany.

A film series at Kino Arsenal accompanies the exhibition and shows selected films whose motifs are also reflected in the exhibition in a transformed form, making the cross-references within her work visible. In addition, the exhibition will be supplemented by a discourse program with lectures and lecture performances that will open up the film and art historical context of Varda's work: Companions, theorists and artists will come to Berlin to appreciate and discuss her work.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by silent green and Spector Books.
