Kaiser Quartett

„The world’s most expensive sampler“ (Chilly Gonzales)

When one thinks of a string quartet, one first thinks of a complicated and elitist genre, as well as perhaps of the long-awaited intermission champagne at the concert hall or cough drops. With their debut album Kaiser Quartett, however, Ingmar Süberkrüb (viola), Martin Bentz (cello), Adam Zolynski (violin) and Jansen Folkers (violin) sometimes put classical music on the substitution bench in order to give genres such as hip hop, funk, electro and pop equal and stylistically confident space with their musical openness and accuracy of timing.

In 2011, the collaboration with pianist and Grammy Award winner Chilly Gonzales began on the occasion of the release of his orchestral rap album The Unspeakable Chilly Gonzales with concerts in Hamburg, Berlin and Toulouse. The long-standing friendly collaboration with Chilly Gonzales culminated in the joint album Chambers in 2015. The year-long release tour offered the opportunity to experience the Kaiser Quartett live in the most renowned venues in Europe and the UK, as well as e.g. in Toronto's Massey Hall, in Montreal and at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

After numerous collaborations with national as well as international artists - including Daniel Hope, BOY, Bosse and Gregory Porter - their debut album Kaiser Quartett with exclusively original compositions was released in 2019. The subsequent tour as headliners brought them to numerous clubs in Germany and France as well as to the Reeperbahn Festival and Eurosonic Noorderslag (Groningen).

More recently, Kaiser Quartett have worked with Anna Ternheim, Die Sterne, Giant Rooks, Leoniden, Roosevelt and presented their version of Abendland on arte Tracks with rap artist Yassin. At the Reeperbahn Festival 2021 they thrilled the Elbphilharmonie together with Australian singer-songwriter RY X.

For their second album Empire, which will be released by Pias in February 2023, Adam, Jansen, Ingmar and Martin retreated to the rural Fattoria Musica near Osnabrück in Lockdown 2021 for several sessions to develop their original compositions. In contrast to their purely instrumental debut album, this time they have expanded the musical field of tension with four vocal tracks and are creating their musical empire together with long-time companions Valeska Steiner, Jarvis Cocker, Joe Flory and L'aupaire.

In spring 2023, the four sympathetic gentlemen from Hamburg will finally be back on an intensive tour of Germany.
