The Third Life of Agnès Varda // Screening "Sans toit ni loi / Vagabond"

Filmscreening

Agnès Varda is regarded as one of the most influential creative personalities of our time - the photographer, filmmaker and visual artist, who died in 2019 at the age of ninety, left behind a life's work spanning more than six decades, in which the pioneer of modern film constantly reinvented herself. Her last creative period - her "third life as a young artist", as she called it herself - is still far less known and less accessible than the numerous films she directed before.

On 6.5, at 6 pm, the first two installation works will already be opened on the lawn in front of the silent green. Afterwards, we will show Varda's film Vagabond (OT: Sans toit ni loi) from 1985 in our Kuppelhalle in the original French version with English subtitles.

Film content:
In winter in the South of France, a young woman is found frozen to death in a ditch. She's unkempt, a vagabond. Through flashbacks and brief interviews, we trace her final weeks, as she camps alone or falls in with various men and women, many of whom project their needs onto her or try to give her life direction. She squats in an old house smoking hash with a man, falls for a Tunisian worker and works beside him pruning grape vines. Through other encounters, and some help that she refuses, she pushes herself more and more into solitude and silence. At the end of the story, the cold weather catches her.
