Von wegen Schicksal
Helga Reidemeister
122 minutes, West Germany (FRG) 1979
German original version without subtitles
On the eve of International Women’s Day, we would like to honor an outstanding filmmaker: Helga Reidemeister (1940–2021). In her observational documentaries, she focused primarily on social and feminist issues and was awarded the German Film Award multiple times for her work.
In Von wegen Schicksal (1978), she follows the struggle for self-determination of 48-year-old assistant seamstress Irene Rakowitz, a mother of four, who decides to divorce her husband in order to give more space to her own dreams and needs.
The film does not shy away from family conflicts, but it does not sensationalize them either. It was awarded the designation besonders wertvoll because it “attempts to unfold existence, to describe it, and to differentiate it.”
The film will be shown in its original version without subtitles.
