Dances and narrations on harp strings -
A celebration of life

The audio journey to Karol Szymanowski promises to be a fascinating adventure if you start it with light luggage. Listening habits, prejudices, categories of order can all be left at home. Instead fantasy, air and courage belong in the backpack. The Polish composer tries to square the circle in String Quartet No. 2, written in 1927. The result is an astoundingly contemporary music that is at the same time perfectly networked with tradition. Double fugue and folk music blend smoothly into neo-romantic, sometimes even expressionistic sound colours. With Nocturne and Tarantella op. 28 in 1915, however, he rolls out the carpet of French Impressionism. Maud Edenwald with her harp and her ensemble entered the same after the break. In addition to Debussy's two famous dances, it is the "Fantastic Tale" by Debussy's trusted André Caplet about Edgar Allan Poe's "Mask of Red Death" that turns the evening into a musical event. And of course Benjamin Britten's gripping viola concerto in an exquisite version with harp. No eye will remain dry.
