Festival of Animation Berlin

Animation for Berlin! The 7th Festival of Animation Berlin (FAB) presents the best international and regional animated films from September 29th to October 1st, both at silent green and at the City Kino Wedding. The focus traditionally lies on the short, artistic animated film in all its forms – from traditional hand-drawn animation to stop motion, CGI, and cross-media experiments, all the way to 360° films. In addition to 12 competition programs – including the Pink-Panda children's programs and 3 feature films – the audience can also look forward to our supporting program.

During the FAB, there will be two pop-up festivals, as well as children's workshops, exhibition tours, and panel discussions. A multitude of talks, panels, masterclasses, and networking events will take place as part of the 1st BERLIN ANIMATION HUB, inviting exchange and discourse.

FAB Dimensional – Animation Expanded (Betonhalle)

With the exhibition FAB Dimensional – Animation Expanded in the Betonhalle, animation art is experienced beyond the cinema screen, at the interface of sculpture, gaming, or installation, transcending the conventional boundaries of linear films. The medium of animated film inherently offers numerous points of connection with other artistic mediums like sculpture, gaming, or installation, both in the production process and in its approach. The exhibition showcases eleven international perspectives that explore animation in space in diverse ways, inviting interaction and awe. Admission is free!

Artists: Philipp Artus (DE), Ulu Braun (DE), Sabine Burchard (CH), Laura Ginés (ES), Pedro Harres (BR), Michelle Kranot (ISR/DK), Uri Kranot (ISR/DK), Motomichi Nakamura (USA), Sophia Schönborn/Simon Stimberg/Justin Robinson (DE), Simon Stimberg (DE), Stiftung Berlin 2037 (DE), Tansy Xiao (USA)

The exhibition was curated and organized by Lea Brugnoli and Lukas Thiele.

Quartet Meets Animation (Kuppelhalle)

Four musicians from the Berliner Symphoniker play and their music is visually interpreted and made visible in the dome. At this Sunday matinee, string music meets live animation. The Berlin duo Kopffarben has been working with digital light painting for more than ten years and lets us be part of the creation of the work from the first stroke. The process becomes an experience!

Framebreakers – Programm I&II (Kuppelhalle)

The FAB hits the roof: As part of the exhibition, we show a carefully curated selection of outstanding animated dome projections. The two programmes depict very different techniques and visual approaches in a total of twelve films (curated by Maarten Isaäk de Heer). Discourse, reflection and exchange are expressly encouraged! Short Q&A after the session (however not after the re-run of the programme).
