Author Basma Abdel Aziz (Egypt)
Host Stefan Weidner
Speaker Denis Abrahams
The journalist, psychiatrist, and activist Basma Abdel Aziz’s literary début uses an abstract dystopian setting as a metaphor for the institutional and moral corruption in Egyptian society: Citizens with various requests stand futilely in line before a government building. The dynamics that arise reveal not only the power mechanisms of an authoritarian state, but also uncover the involvement of the army and religious powers, as well as the role of patriarchal structures.

In his literary début, journalist and filmmaker Omar Robert Hamilton portrays a young couple in the midst of the Cairo protests. Both are actively involved in a group that provides the world with news via Twitter. But the initial hopefulness and euphoria are followed by a devastating series of events. »Omar Robert Hamilton brings vividly to life the failed revolution of 2011 on the streets of Cairo, in all its youthful bravery and naive utopianism.« [J. M. Coetzee]
