Kontraklang presents Cubistics

concerts

In 2003, sound installations with the Morrowsound 3D sound system, developed by composer and sound artist Charlie Morrow, were presented at the legendary New York art location The Kitchen. Now the immersive sound system comes into the Kuppelhalle – and with it the music and performance program Cubistics. In addition to six mixed media music pieces, two trioperformances by Miya Masaoka and Lucio Capece/Derek Shirley will also be on view and heard. Within abstract ambient tracks and electronic-experimental soundscapes, the spatial and mobile 3D sound of the Morrowsoundboxes will create a completely new listening experience.

Lucio Capece and Derek Shirley present a new version of their autobiographical interview based piece Suspending Its Body From Our Shoulders - A Poplar Story, which premiered in summer 2019. Capece is an Argentinian musician who lives in Berlin since 2004. He develops sound-space works that concentrate on the experience of perception. Derek Shirley studied jazz bass at the music faculty of McGill University and performed in Canada and the USA with bands such as Zebradonk and The Woodchoppers Association before moving to Berlin in 2001.

The American performer, multi-instrumentalist and composer Miya Masaoka has developed a two-part new piece in her Cubistics series especially for the evening, which she will premiere together with Kaffe Matthews and Andrea Parkins. Miya Masaoka trained in Japanese music with Suenobu Togi and then studied at San Francisco State University and Mills College with Alvin Curran. In the early 90s she worked with Pharoah Sanders, Wadada Leo Smith and Henry Kaiser. The British sound artist and composer Kaffe Matthews attaches particular importance to the physical experience of music in her electroacoustic compositions. With success – she has already received several awards for her work. And Andrea Parkins is a New York accordion player whose music is influenced by John Cage, Fluxus, musique concrète and 70s analog synthesizers.

Kontraklang is a concert series for contemporary music that reflects the diversity of Berlin's contemporary music scenes and is at the same time a forum for current trends.
