Peter Gregson
Concert
300 years after their composition (1717-1723), Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suites (BWV 1007-1012) are among the best-known and most popular works in the classical canon. The award-winning Scottish cellist and composer Peter Gregson has now reinterpreted them in a surprising way.
"These suites are fundamental to the cello repertoire," says Gregson. "I grew up with them and had sleepless nights during the production of this album because I wondered what Bach would have said about reinventing his suites."
On Recomposed by Peter Gregson: Bach - The Cello Suites doesn't play a single soloist, six cellists, including Gregson himself, play the pieces he has put into a subtle electronic sound bed. Gregson describes how he did not think of Bach's compositions as images, i.e. two-dimensional, but as sculptures. Even if the object remains the same, one can turn and turn it, look at it from changing perspectives, direct the light at it and see different shadow forms, recognize different structures.
