Contested Grounds – Contested Colors
Films, Installations and a Book
Contested Grounds – Contested Colors looks at the relations between the works of five artists: Filmmakers Arthur and Corinne Cantrill research the relationship between landscape, indigenous history, cinema, and politics. Their three-color technique draws on James Clerk Maxwell’s additive theory of color mixing (1861). The static elements are reproduced in perfect natural colors, while the moving elements (clouds, shadows) appear in ‘unnatural’ primary colors. Installation artists Mareike Bernien and Kerstin Schroedinger have researched the ideological implications of colors in different contexts. What becomes visible in color pictures and what is it that we don’t see?
The Red Book(2017) by Inas Halabi attempts to capture the ungraspable threat of radiation using stories and visual material: “A rumour has no colour and can’t be seen, but it spreads faster than fire underneath your own two feet”. More about the program...
