Olga Tokarczuk: The Books of Jacob
Lesung I internationales literaturfestival berlin
For some he was a messiah, for others a heretic. »The Books of Jacob« follow Jakob Frank, mythical leader of the Frankists, through his time: the 18th century. Admirers and Adversaries tell the story of his life that stretches from the Hapsburg and Ottoman Empires to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Lauded by critics, the publication met with a violent reaction from far right-groups in Poland who feared for the dominant nationalist interpretation of the formation of the modern Polish nation-state.
Both reading and conversation will be held in Polish and German.
