Martin Gödeler holds a doctorate in mathematics and works as a tutor. When his companion disappears after their vacation, he is suspected of murder. During his interrogation, he enthusiastically provides details about his life that paints a picture of a genius that oscillates between ecstasy and neglect, a picture which becomes all the more puzzling when he disappears without a trace after being released from custody.
