MUTTER

Concert

Although the band Mutter always emphasises that they are a normal rock band, they have successfully eluded any definition for over 30 years and 13 albums. The taz calls them a "mystery of German rock history", Diedrich Diederichsen accuses them of an "extremely developed conceptuality", others speak of misunderstood discourse pop, collage noise or name their pub after the band. Max Müller's lyrics are small, sometimes laconic, but always precisely observed everyday stories that are linguistic art precisely because of their abrupt immediacy. The band is seldom explicitly political, rather it is their urgent style of performance and their musical uncompromisingness and DIY ethos, in which a loud disagreement with the circumstances is expressed.
