Festival Opening: Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin 2025
The 6th Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin opens on October 22, 2025 here at silent green with the Venice-premiered documentary Songs of Slow Burning Earth (2024) by Ukrainian filmmaker Olha Zhurba.
The film is an essayistic diary of landscapes, conversations, and sounds, recorded at places at varying distances from the frontline – from a bakery in embattled Mykolaiv to a rehabilitation center in quieter Lviv. Through subtle and fragmentary observations, it portrays a society where war has become part of everyday life, while still engaging in a persistent, quiet dialogue about the possibility of a future and humanity.
After the screening, a Q&A with producer Darya Bassel will take place.
In addition to the film screening, Ukrainian avant-pop artist DONBASGRL will perform before the screening. Her sound is characterized by deep bass and elements of Ukrainian folklore. Having grown up in a small industrial town in eastern Ukraine, she has been living in Germany for ten years and collaborates with music producer Jakohitsdifferent.
