Angel Bat Dawid

Angel Bat Dawid is a Chicago-based composer, conductor, clarinetist, pianist, DJ, and recording engineer with over 35 years of experience as a performer. A 2025 United States Artist Fellow and current Artist in Residence at Northwestern University's Black Arts Consortium, Dawid is recognized as one of the defining voices of contemporary Afrofuturism — her practice bridges classical composition, gospel, jazz, and avant-garde improvisation with speculative aesthetics and archival research.

Since her debut album The Oracle (2019, International Anthem Recording Co.), which she produced, performed, and engineered entirely herself, Dawid has established herself as a singular compositional voice. Her 14-movement work The Souls of Black Folk Suite premiered at Chicago's Harris Theater in 2026, following the commissioned piece Blk Metropolis Apocalypse, which she premiered with the string ensemble D-Composed at the opening of Theaster Gates' Land School.

Dawid leads the ensemble The Brothahood (whose album LIVE was praised by NPR) as well as the group Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty, and is the clarinetist for Damon Locks' Black Monument Ensemble. Her collaborations span André 3000, Moor Mother, and Saul Williams to Shabaka Hutchings and Lonnie Holley; she has also hosted a monthly residency on NTS Radio for over five years, documenting Black music history. She contributed to the score for Season 2 of Terence Nance's HBO series Random Acts of Flyness.

Internationally, Dawid has performed at the Barbican Centre, the BBC Proms, the EFG London Jazz Festival, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and Jazzfest Berlin, among others. In June 2026, she premieres Henry 'Box' Brown: Tales of a Magical Nee Grow at Western Front in Vancouver.
