Arsenal: Listening Sessions

In 2024, the third edition of the Archival Assembly festival took place. Its theme was Resounding Archives: The Politics of Listening to the Moving Image. The focus lay on the auditory dimension—challenging the dominance of the image in the study of the world’s film heritage. What can we learn about film history from the soundtrack? What can we discover about cinema when we include oral history, audience discussions, language versions, gossip, or radio broadcasts about film?

Shortly before the festival began, migas, a listening bar where people can collectively listen to music while enjoying drinks, opened in the neighborhood. During the festival, specially curated audio recordings from film archives were presented there.

In January, Arsenal reserved a table at MARS, where visitors can listen to these sessions over headphones for an entire week. The programs are supplemented by additional textual and visual material.
