Unicorns? Unicorns! There is hardly any other phenomenon that so clearly illustrates the history of the internet over the last 20 years: from queer spaces of freedom and start-up culture to the right-wing ‘vibe shift’.

How did a mythical creature become an icon of the digital present and a canvas for the fears of cultural conservatives?

In her brilliant essay on the rise and crisis of social media, Annekathrin Kohout sets off for Candy Mountain, explores the garishly colourful internet culture of millennials – accompanied by an Erasure soundtrack – and examines the unicorn as a consumer phenomenon, eventually ending up in Silicon Valley, where investors are on the hunt for the next billion-dollar ‘unicorn start-up’.

The reading will take place in German.
 

Annekathrin Kohout holds a PhD in cultural studies and is a freelance writer. She is co-editor of the book series Digitale Bildkulturen published by Wagenbach Verlag, as well as the journal POP. Kultur und Kritik. She writes a column on internet culture for the taz. Her most recent books have been on internet feminism, hyperreactivity, nerds and K-pop.
