transmediale: Exhibition "Emergent Conditions" – Artist Talk & Séance
How much agency does an artist retain when working with generative systems and trained models? And what happens when the process itself becomes as significant as the result?
In this artist talk, Amanda E. Metzger, Laura Benech and Zeno Gries share insights into their works and current research, moving beyond the finished piece to discuss process and method. What does it mean to think like a protocol designer rather than an image maker? How do you build a model, design a data permission system, and what does it mean to be an artist today when the medium is not an object but a system?
Emergent Conditions brings together three works at the intersection of artistic and scientific research, reflecting on the tensions and bridges that emerge from new capacities acquired by synthetic agents, including very human qualities such as memory and voice. Drawing from cybernetics and critical AI studies to quantum computing, neuroscience, and memory studies, the works make visible the growing co-constitution of subjectivity between human experience and technological systems.
