VOICES Performing Arts Festival: Being Adam

VOICES Performing Arts Festival
The VOICES Performing Arts Festival is an independent platform that represents the voices of displaced artists who have to find new ways to be heard. It explores how an artist's identity can transcend geographical boundaries and whether displaced artists can redefine themselves in a new cultural context and enrich it.

This year's music, theater and dane productions focus on artists from countries of the former USSR.

Being Adam: experimental music of Central Asia
with ensemble mosaik and Duo Falak

Adam, the eternal traveler, walks the cyclical journey where the forces of light and shadow intertwine, shaping his spirit. Each step through this labyrinth leaves an indelible mark, guiding him toward a deeper understanding of what it means to be human. His soul, like a canvas, is painted with the wisdom of trials faced and overcome, revealing the essence of “Adam bol!” — “Be a Human!”

ensemble mosaik carefully gathers the fragments of Adam’s spiritual world, weaving them into a new narrative, creating a renewed understanding of what it means to be human, in a world that is constantly shifting and redefining itself.

The performance offers a unique opportunity to experiene the diversity of the rapidly growing music scene in Central Asia. A panel discussion complements the concert program.

Beyond their outstanding instrumental skills they display creative individuality and a never-ending joy in experiments. In years of tight cooperation they have created an entity of sound that is highest ranking both in artistic competence and openness to the most diverse concepts of contemporary music. Close cooperation with up-and-coming composers and the tying in of digital media are key to the ensembles work in composition, interpretation and presentation.

Duo Falak
Duo Falak will perform improvisational music based on the traditional Tajik genre "Falak" (sky, cosmos, fate, destiny) in a modern experimental style on guitar and doyra. They use ancient metrical-rhythmic patterns and melodic-intonational formulas characteristic of Falak. The musicians incorporate elements of contemporary improvisational music into their sets, blending archaic and modern elements to create experimental interpretations, synthesizing the languages of distant cultures.

With Denis Sorokin from Saint Petersburg (guitar) and Shohin Qurbonov from Dushanbe (doyra drum).
