Film programme

Die Entdeckung Deutschlands durch die Marsbewohner (1916, 15min)

An early science fiction film with commentary by Britta Lange

During the First World War, the German Empire was visited by three Martians. This is shown in a film from 1916: ‘The Discovery of Germany by the Inhabitants of Mars’. It was not only the first official propaganda film for Germany and ‘neutral foreign countries’. It is also an early and previously uncanonised science fiction film: with news interception on Mars, voice recorder and space flight, but also with particles from fairy tales and love stories. The commentary traces the tangle of stories that unfold in the screenplay by Jewish lawyer Richard Otto Frankfurter. Fragments from the archives are woven into a journey of discovery today, more than a hundred years later.

FILM TRICK TRICK FILM

Moderated by Stefanie Schlüter

Film tricks and animated films encourage us to try out the many possibilities of animation for ourselves. The film Kratzig 1, made at a primary school in Kreuzberg under the artistic direction of Ute Aurand and Robert Beavers, makes pencils move into pencil cases and chairs stomp through the snow as if by magic. Colourful hula hoops make children disappear in the workshop film Hoop Loop by Japanese artist Keitaro Oshima. In the humorous film A Chairy Tale by Norman McLaren and Claude Jutra, the only film in the programme that was not made with the help of amateurs, a chair develops a strange life of its own and drives a man to despair. Many children were involved in the experimental documentary film My School by Keitaro Oshima: They drew hundreds of individual images from everyday school life in the specially set up animation studio. Concerts

Renaissance Woman
Renaissance Woman
is an indie musician from Virginia, USA. Having lived in Berlin for over a year now, her work is cathartic and thoughtful, woven with sweet folk melodies that permeate the coldness of winter.

Choir concert by Feature Chor Berlin
The Feature Choir Berlin is the urban answer to modern choral music away from the norm: with exclusive arrangements of songs such as Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush, Happy Phantom by Tori Amos or Hot Knife by Fiona Apple, the singers bring an unmistakable sound to the stage. Led by Anna-Lena Bolz, they are known for concerts in the Kammermusiksaal of the Philharmonie, in the Theater im Delphi and as a feature guest for Alice Phoebe Lou in the sold-out Funkhaus. With Christopher Lübeck on piano (DT Berlin, Alphaville), they combine deep folk songs, experimental sound installations and powerful a cappella moments to create an unforgettable experience.

presented by Musicboard Berlin

Sleepwalk the Dog
Sleepwalk the Dog has been described as "folk from another planet". Folk melodies are blended with jazzy three-part vocal harmonies and avant-garde experimental elements to create something that is simultaneously surreal and beautiful. Expect an day full of dreams.

Matching Outfits
Matching Outfits are a trio of adopted Berliners whose warped, wistful take on indie pop has been compared to “a Super 8 film from the family attic” (Tip Magazine). The lyrics of Swedish frontwoman Linnea Mårtensson capture life’s major losses and minor inconveniences in gut-wrenching, occasionally hilarious detail, while bright keyboard chords and dulcet three-part harmonies morph into discordant freakouts and shout-along choruses. In 2022, the group released its debut album Band Made Out Of Sand on Berlin cassette label Kitchen Leg. Among other honors, it received heavy play on cult US radio station WFMU. The band does not wear matching outfits, except when they do.

Kota No Uta
Kota No Uta is a Berlin-based artist, producer, and singer-songwriter. Her experimental sound blends neo-psychodelic-soul and nu jazz creating a unique musical experience. As a multicultural storyteller, Kota draws inspiration from metaphor and mythology, often reflecting on daily observations of her surroundings in her lyrics. Together with Aktino Troubounis on double bass, Adam Gintowt on percussion, Tim Granbacka on keys, and Tom Varral on guitar, they create a truly immersive experience for their audience, evoking the feeling of being lost in the woods and sharing beautiful moments together.
