TAL label night

Threnody for the KhoiSan is the title of the debut album of Garth Erasmus from Cape Town, South Africa, which will be released in late April on the renowned label TAL, run by Stefan Schneider.

Garth Erasmus has been actively involved in the application of the indigenous knowledge of the KhoiSan – the indigenous people of South Africa and the surrounding regions – since 1985, ranging from politics to music. From 1999 to 2012, he was a member of the South African FirstNation activist group Khoi Khonnexion and, through his regular performances in Europe, part of the Hamburg-based band Kante. After appearing on the TAL label compilation Listened to by Others (TAL32) and a number of international compilations in recent years, Erasmus is now appearing as a solo artist on TAL for the first time.

During the past couple of years Garth Erasmus has also established an artistic releationship with musicians and fine artists from South Africa, Namibia and Hamburg. Together with Ruth May, Peter Thiessen, Nesindano Nomises and others he was part of the theatre piece The House of The Falling Bones, which they toured with in Germany in 2018. This year he has been invited by Akademie der Künste, Berlin to participate the group show Oscillations which will opened on April 26.

So Sner consist of Susanna Gartmayer on bass clarinet and Stefan Schneider on electronics. They started working together in 2020 and released their well acclaimed album Reime (TAL25) in 2021. So Sner’s sound is equally oriented towards experiment and tradition, whose roots can be traced back to the UK of the early 80s: an era in which soul and synth, jazz and industrial, avant-garde and polyrhythm were blended with the help of intellectualism and punk attitude in such a way that manifold sketches of possible music emerged which are only being colorized today.
