UnNatural Encounters

silent green presents

In cooperation with the European Media Art Platform (EMAP) and transmediale

What can artistic perspectives reveal that data and facts cannot? How does art succeed in making this tangible? Can art and technology work together for the development of new forms of communication, empathy, solidarity, and responsibility for our environment?

These questions will be the focus of silent green‘s major group exhibition UnNatural Encounters in January 2025. Ten specially selected works, created between 2022 and 2024 within the scope of the European Media Art Platform‘s (EMAP) Europe-wide residency programme, will be presented in the Betonhalle. As part of the exhibition, transmediale will present an eleventh work in the adjacent transmediale studio.

The works exhibited are an exploration of the fundamental issues of our time: environmental sustainability, socio-ecological justice and technological change. All of the artists work on a transdisciplinary and collaborative basis, bringing together art, science and technology in innovative ways. Their acoustic experiments, immersive landscapes and speculative visions of the future examine the complex relationships between people, technology and the environment. Their approaches are diverse, ranging from data visualisation and experimental documentary film to sound sculpture, performance, video and interactive VR installations. Each work opens up new perspectives on the dynamics of our ecosystem and encourages reflection on the far-reaching consequences of human activity on the environment.

With works by Tatsuru Arai & Boris Vaitovič, Marc Vilanova, Davor Sanvincenti, Bethan Hughes, masharu, Jaschnow & Stefanie Schroeder, Transformative Narratives, Carl Emil Carlsen, Endi Tupja & Klodiana Millona, Studio Above&Below and Ali Akbar Mehta.

An accompanying programme of workshops, talks and performances invites visitors to delve deeper into the themes of the artworks. Artists, scientists, activists and visitors will have the opportunity for dialogue and actively engagement with the issues facing our future.

More information will follow soon.

European Media Art Platform
In an increasingly digitised and technology-driven world, it is above all artists, alongside scientists and programmers, who are creating alternative visions for a more sustainable and just society. To take a different technological path from China or Silicon Valley, while countering growing anti-democratic movements, Europe needs to focus on the creative, critical and unifying potential of the arts. This is the mission of the European Media Art Platform (EMAP). It is a consortium of 16 leading European media art organisations specialising in digital and media art, bio art and robotic art. EMAP was founded by Werkleitz - Centre for Media Art and is co-funded by Creative Europe.
